Instructor Wei Tran

Wei has studied under three different methods of Wing Chun for over thirteen years starting with Kamon Wing Chun, WSLVT (Wong Shun Leung Ving Tsun) and finally ABMVT (Applied Body Mechanics Ving Tsun) under Coach Jason Gowan. During this time he has trained with, and taught by, some of the most highly regarded practitioners and has gained acknowledgement and respect from his peers.

During his thirteen years of studying Wing Chun, eleven of those years were also spent teaching as an assistant instructor. He is enthusiastic about the martial arts and is passionate about helping his students achieve real results in their training.

Aside from Wing Chun, he’s also a practitioner of the internal martial art known as Xing Yi Quan and in order to expand on his skills and knowledge, he’s currently learning Chen style Tai Chi. Boxing, basic groundwork and take-down defences are also within his skill range.

Wei is also a qualified Level 2 Fitness Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer.

I have been training with Wei for about a year now. He is the best teacher! So passionate about teaching Kung-fu. Very calm and patient and happy to go over things again and again. I now feel very strong and very confident in all areas of my life because of his training.

I have known and trained with Wei for about a year. I found him to be a dedicated, hard working, tolerant and an excellent instructor. His knowledge of the Wing Chun system is second to none, and I would recommend him without hesitation.

If there’s one thing that comes across from Wei Tran, it’s his logical thought process. Everything he demonstrates is broken down and explained in a way that anyone can appreciate the simplicity and beauty of what he does. And with his logic comes a disdain of the conservationism that has dominated much of Wing Chun in the last 5 decades.

Wei loves Wing Chun more than anybody I’ve known, but if a move or a tradition fails to stand up to logical scrutiny, he will not hesitate to remove or adapt it. Because Wei, in keeping with the spirit of the past masters he most admires, stringently believes that martial arts must adapt or face obscurity. But adaptation only comes from a thorough understanding and appreciation of the past, an attribute that comes through in every one of Wei’s classes.

I have trained under a number of instructors over the years, but none of them match the logical brilliance and sheer passion I encountered with Wei Tran.

Wei has been my sparring partner for nearly 6 years now and counting. Our Wing Chun journey has been about hard work, fine tuning, research, sparring and trying out different combat systems etc. The knowledge accumulated has allowed him to teach SIMA Wing Chun which is his interpretation of the art of Wing Chun. The system in general is scientific.

Let me be honest, it’s all about the human anatomy and basic body mechanics which is broken down to suit any individual. The art of fighting is very simple, but without logic, understanding, positioning, using our five senses and emotional attributes, as Bruce Lee stated, you become a mechanical man or woman.

Wei loves martial arts in general and SIMA Wing Chun is a science taught by a good teacher (Wei Tran). You will excel, however, nothing will come easy to you. You have to put in the hard work, practice, question him and be humbled by what you have learnt, always share the information and pass the knowledge down so the next generation can evolve. Wei will be my kung fu brother for life and you will become a good exponent of the art but more importantly become a better human as you learn from him.
