If there’s one thing that comes across from Wei Tran, it’s his logical thought process. Everything he demonstrates is broken down and explained in a way that anyone can appreciate the simplicity and beauty of what he does. And with his logic comes a disdain of the conservationism that has dominated much of Wing Chun in the last 5 decades.
Wei loves Wing Chun more than anybody I’ve known, but if a move or a tradition fails to stand up to logical scrutiny, he will not hesitate to remove or adapt it. Because Wei, in keeping with the spirit of the past masters he most admires, stringently believes that martial arts must adapt or face obscurity. But adaptation only comes from a thorough understanding and appreciation of the past, an attribute that comes through in every one of Wei’s classes.
I have trained under a number of instructors over the years, but none of them match the logical brilliance and sheer passion I encountered with Wei Tran.
